The mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, assured today, Sunday, that he will resign from his post if anyone proves that the derailment of the Elevador da Glória, in which 16 people died, was the result of an error for which he was responsible.
In an interview with SIC, his first with a media outlet since the accident on September 3, Carlos Moedas stated that “in this tragedy there is no error that can be attributed to a decision by the Mayor.”
"If anyone can prove that any action I took, anything I did as Mayor in relation to this company [Carris] led to this company not spending enough on maintenance, to this company not doing what it had to do, I will resign that day," he said.
The Glória elevator in Lisbon derailed last Wednesday, causing 16 deaths and 22 injuries, including Portuguese and foreigners of various nationalities.
The Glória elevator is managed by Carris, connects Praça dos Restauradores to Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara, in Bairro Alto, on a route of approximately 265 meters and is very popular with tourists.
